A church minister is "devastated" by the death of a friend who slipped and landed on a knife sitting upright in a dishwasher.
The freak accident happened at the Church of Scotland manse of the Rev Sharon Colvin in Dunrobin Road, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, on Tuesday.
Jane McDonald, 31, was taken to the town's Monklands General Hospital, but she died shortly after admission.
In a statement issued by the Church of Scotland, Ms Colvin said she was shocked by Ms McDonald's death.
She said: "I was devastated by the tragedy which involved a member of my extended family – not a lodger – who had been staying for a while at the manse."
Ms Colvin said that when the accident occurred she co-operated with the ambulance controllers over the telephone.
She said: "My ex-husband and I have four grown up children and three grandchildren.
"I am now staying with friends and will not be preaching on Sunday.
Similar accident
"Alternative arrangements have been made to cover my own church service on Sunday and the service at which I would have preached."
Six years ago a 12-year-old boy in Northampton was killed following a similar accident.
A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) said the case illustrated there was a danger from dishwashers.
He advised the public to ensure knives always pointed down in dishwashers, despite some manufacturers arguing otherwise.
