BBC – Newsbeat – Health – Pregnancy alcohol ban causes confusion

By Actondco

Expectant mothers, who have been advised not to drink any alcohol during pregnancy, have told Newsbeat the new guidelines are confusing.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has urged women to avoid drink for the first three months and limit consumption to one or two units once or twice a week afterwards.

June Daniels, who is four months pregnant and has a two-year-old daughter named Isabelle, said the institution's new guidelines are so confusing, that she has avoided alcohol altogether.

She told Newsbeat: "I have had absolutely no alcohol while I've been pregnant just because it's so confusing with the different advice we've been getting. I just didn't bother."

Binge drinking

NICE used to say one small glass of wine a night would be fine for mums-to-be but, it has urged mothers to limit their alcohol consumption, following a rise in binge drinking.

Deputy chief executive Dr Gillian Leng said: "There is nothing that categorically says this amount of alcohol is safe and that amount isn't.

"We have chosen to take a cautious line because no evidence of harm doesn't mean there is no risk of harm."

But Charlotte, who has two children, Tom and Grace, claims that she had the odd drink when she was pregnant and she did not feel bad about it.

She said: "If they've got no evidence to say only drink one glass every couple of weeks, then I don't know why they keep giving us advice when they don't really know what effect it has on us.

"There is so much information and advice given on everything, what you eat. It's just a case of using your common sense really."

According to experts, drinking heavily in pregnancy can cause foetal alcohol syndrome, which can leave children with features like small heads, widely spaced eyes and behavioural or learning problems.
